Flax Seed Health Benefits

by Jon David Miller, M.A., M.Div., natural health wellness educator & author

Benefits Of Flax Seed Oil

The benefits of flax seed oil have been gaining a lot of attention in recent years. There is good reason for this.  The main benefit of flax oil is what it does for the brain and nerves. Because flax seed oil also helps prevent circulatory problems and cancer, the two major killer health conditions, it has really become popular.

The flax seed oil health benefits are primarily due to it being one of the highest food sources of crucially needed Omega 3 fatty acids.

There is a terrible widespread deficiency of the Omega 3 source Essential Fatty Acid (Alpha Linolenic Acid) and the Omega 3 fatty acids that are derived from it.

Omega 3's are crucial to good brain and nerve function. They also reduce arthritis and other inflammation and pain, and help keep cholesterol lower. Omega 3's aid the body in oxygen absorption.

Further, according to Dr. Budwig's work in Germany, supported by additional experience, there is an anti-cancer benefit of flax oil, from the Omega 3's derived from it.

The quality of the skin, hair and nails are improved by the flax oil. Many people's skin problems have improved.

Flax oil also helps with weight control. Some of the most popular weight-loss product packages have flax oil capsules (also known as "linseed oil") as a key component. This oil emulsifies fat in the body and moves it along.

The benefits of flax seed oil are just a part of flax benefits. The whole flax seed's health benefits are far greater than the oil alone can provide.

Benefits of Flax Seed

Helps With Many Problems

STRESS & DEPRESSION

The Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) in flax seed is the source of the Omega 3 fatty acids.  A key one is Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA).  This fatty acid is crucial to brain function, and is often deficient in modern people.

DHA is important for brain development in children, for calming in the face of stress, for mental acuity, and for memory.  Having enough of it makes one calmer and smarter, and it may prevent the development of dementia, or Alzheimer's disease.

CANCER

Dr. Budwig's studies on the anti-cancer benefits of flax seed suggested that it was important to have a protein food to be eaten with flax oil so that lipo-proteins could be formed to deliver the Essential Fatty Acids.

She offered cottage cheese as a source of whey protein to form the lipo-proteins. (Proteins serve as carriers in the body for other nutrients to be received by cells as nourishment.)

Actually, the whole milled flax seed with its 22% protein, including all the essential amino acids, may be a better way of providing those needed proteins with the essential fats -- all contained in the same food. Further research is needed.

Further, lignans, highly valuable protective antioxidants, are far more abundant in flaxseed, as much as 800 times more that found in any other plant food. Certain phytoestrogens among these lignans have special cancer-preventing benefits.

The lignans are much more abundant in the whole seed than in the expelled oil.  Most antioxidants are lost in the process of expelling the oil.

Even The National Institute has considered flaxseed worthy of further research for its cancer-fighting qualities. Raising the amount of fiber intake is known to lower the risk of colon cancer.

LOWERING CHOLESTEROL & PREVENTING HEART DISEASE

A combination of the Alpha Linoleic Acid (source of Omega 3 fatty acids), the lignans (protective anti-oxidants), and the superior soluble fiber in whole flax seed, will do the best job of lowering (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. The effectiveness of flaxseed in this regard is well-established.

In a British study, a group of young healthy women averaging 24 years old, was fed a diet including 50 grams of ground flax seed per day. In just 4 weeks, total cholesterol was down 9 percent, while bad LDL cholesterol was reduced by 18 percent.

Omega 3 fatty acids also help prevent formation of blood clots that might bring on a heart attack or stroke. Arteries will be cleaner and more pliable.

COLON TROUBLES

Flax provides the perfect blend of soluble and insoluble fiber for the better health of the intestinal tract. One ounce of flaxseed meets 32% of the USDA's reference amount for fiber for the day.

Consumed with plenty of pure water, flax seed softens the stool and makes bowel elimination easier, a blessing to those with any level of constipation.

Much of the flax seed health benefit in this area is from the mucilage, the unique soluble fiber that is so soothing and cleansing to the digestive tract. This eases elimination while increasing the volume and soothing irritation at the same time. Also flax gently cleans excess mucus and other debris from the small intestine, improving absorption of nutrients.

Flax is appreciated greatly by the whole spectrum of those with intestinal problems, from constipation to irritable bowel.

IMMUNE CHALLENGES

There are at least two different elements in flax seed that help the immune system do what it needs to do.  The omega 3 fatty acids from Alpha Linolenic Acid and the protective antioxidants called lignans, can work together to enhance the immune response, or to tone it down if it is in hyper mode.

ASTHMA

The omega 3 fatty acids are thought to reduce the inflammation of asthma. The mucilage in flax fiber is also good for the lungs.

ARTHRITIS AND INFLAMMATION

The Omega 3 fatty acids help reduce joint inflammation. Many experts on health, including Dr. Koop, the well-known former Surgeon General, urge people to consume Omega 3 rich foods. In a study cited in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in January of 1996, subjects taking flax oil every day averaged a 30% reduction in inflammation.

DIABETES

In a University of Toronto study, flaxseed bread was shown to lower blood sugar by 28% within an hour vs. those who ate otherwise similar bread with no flax content.

MENSTRUAL DIFFICULTIES

Flax seed, like soybeans, is rich in phytoestrogens, plant compounds that have effects like the hormone, estrogen.  These can help with all kinds of female problems, including menopause.

NOTE: There is some evidence that phytoestrogens are better avoided by men with prostate cancer.

Flaxseed Is A Leading Health Product

Consuming high quality flaxseed on a regular basis will stop many of the common health problems. You can join the growing thousands of people enjoying the benefit of flax seed oil and other flax seed benefits.

Of all the things that are offered for better health, this one is among the simplest and lowest in cost with the most definitely noticeable results.

Out of hundreds of natural health products on the market, some of the best selling ones are colon-cleansing bulk fiber products that make bowel movements easy. High quality milled flaxseed is far superior as a gentle soluble fiber, and because of the nutrition it supplies along with the easy BM's.

Omega 3 fish oil capsules and flax oil are quite popular too. But nearly all of those are rancid. High quality organic flax seed, milled and vacuum packed, is much better protected and has many tasty uses.

Many take protein supplements of various types. High quality milled flax seed has 22% protein, and it is complete with all the essential amino acids.

And our convenient and versatile organic milled flaxseed is WAY less expensive than any of the products mentioned above.
