The packaging process of Northern Edge organic flaxseed is undergoing revision.

Due to a longstanding problem in achieving and maintaining a vacuum-seal on the bags (also called pouches) of flax, the mill has decided to cease the vacuum procedure in favor of simply compression packing. The pouches will not be as hard to the touch.

There have been a greater number of bags failing to hold the vacuum seal in recent years. Changes in the manufacture of the foil pouches over time led to this issue.

Other pouch materials have been tried in the last few years, but the same problem has occurred with many of the pouches not holding the vacuum-seal.

The Northern Edge organic milled flaxseed pouches have always been compressed before applying the vacuum to remove air. This in conjunction with the specialized slicing of our milled flaxseed, whereby each piece seals itself, has been shown to be adequate protection.

Testing on the compressed only product has shown that there is no significant deterioration in the quality for more than a year, no rancidity or nutrient loss in pouches that are not vacuum-sealed.

Now the flax mill will be producing compression packed bags for the milled product without the vacuum seal. This will reduce production expense and prevent a price increase for the time being.

The compression packed pouches are normally firm, but not as hard as the vacuum-sealed milled bags have been.

Before opening, bags of milled flax can be stored at a cool room temperature, although some people like to refrigerate them or keep them in the freezer.

There is a "Best Before" date on each package that is set for inventory and sales purposes. There is actually no loss in quality for a couple of years or more if the bag is unopened and stored in a refrigerator or freezer, even beyond the "Best Before' date.

The Northern Edge organic whole seeds have been vacuum-packed sometimes and sometimes not, depending on the mill's schedule and equipment availability.

There is really no need for the whole seeds to be compressed or vacuum-packed. These can be stored at room temperature in a cupboard or pantry until use in grinding or sprouting.

Open the pouch by cutting across the top of the bag below the notches and above the reseal lock strip, then pull it open. Then the bag should be closed with the lock strip. Milled flax is best refrigerated after opening.

We do currently have some vacuum-sealed pouches of both items remaining in stock.

While supplies last, pouches that are vacuum-packed will be used to fill the larger orders of 12 and 16 pouch cases.

From here on, smaller orders of milled flax will commonly be filled with compression packed pouches. Eventually that will be the case for all orders.
