Quinoa

Organically Grown on the Canadian Prairies

Our "Cleaned" Quinoa Tastes Better Than Other Brands!

Simple Preparation Of Quinoa

(NOTE: This organic Canadian cleaned quinoa is currently unavailable.)

Quinoa (Keen' wa) is a small, light tan seed, round but flattened on the ends. It has been called "the seed of the gods", a term that is befitting this wondrous little seed.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Wild) is an annual herb from the Andes Mountains of South America, where it has been cultivated for 3000 years. It was a staple of the Inca Empire. They considered it a "gift from the gods", in that it helped to sustain and nourish their peoples through the generations.

Quinoa is a high protein, gluten free grain-like seed, and a good source of protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates and vitamins. Quinoa provides people, especially those with gluten intolerance, a nutritional, economical, easy to prepare, flavorful food source.

It is not really a grain for it does not belong to the grass family. It is the seed of a broad leaf plant, and a close relative of lamb's quarters. The quinoa plant grows 3 to 7 feet high and produces a small, flat, circular-shaped seed.

Varieties have been adapted which grow well on the Canadian prairies, enabling local farmers to grow a great alternative food source. The quinoa we offer is grown organically, without need of pesticides.

Quinoa, as a plant that thrives at high altitude conditions, adapts very well to the growing conditions of the prairies of Saskatchewan with hot days, cool nights, abundance of sunshine, clean air and gentle rains.

The golden Quinoa varieties grown on the prairies are said to be more flavorful than the white seeded South American types, while being nutritionally similar.

Quinoa Nutrition

The ancient Incas also called quinoa the "mother grain". The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization observes that quinoa is closer to the ideal protein balance than any other common grain, being at least equal to milk in protein quality.

Quinoa has a nutritionally attractive amino acid balance, being exceptionally high in lysine. Lysine is considered to be deficient in most cereal grains, making their protein profile incomplete.

Quinoa's nutritional profile has higher levels of calcium, phosphorus, iron, fiber and B-Vitamins than barley, oats, rice, corn, or wheat. With it's B vitamins and easily digested proteins and carbohydrates, quinoa is known as an energy food. It's beneficial complex carbohydrates are metabolized over an extended time for sustained stamina.

            Quinoa Nutritional Information
Energy 4299 Kcal/kg
Total Digestible Nutrients 93.7%
Protein 15.4%
Carbohydrates 65.2%
Calcium 0.07%
Phosphorus 0.40%
Crude Fat 8.75%
Crude Fibre 3.64%
Ash 2.61%

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states the quality of Quinoa is "equal to... the protein of whole dried milk".

Protein

High quality protein is absolutely essential for repair of tissues and for carrying minerals and other nutrients into cells.

The highly-cooked, poorly-digested protein foods most people consume still leave them with a deficiency of good protein to meet the body's needs.

Quinoa, unlike most grains, is rich in lysine as well as the other essential amino acids. It has a complete protein profile for supporting good health in those who consume it.

Minerals

Minerals are especially deficient in the modern diet as chemical agriculture does not commonly restore these crucial elements to the soil. The soils become depleted as the harmful chemicals destroy important soil bacteria that would help the plants draw more minerals if they were present.

Organic growing methods continuously nourish and rebuild the vital living soil with mineral rich organic material and other nutrients, including healthy bacteria and worms that assist in making the crops richer in minerals.

Calcium is the major mineral of the body, and it is commonly very deficient. Stress, anxiety and weakening bones result from long-term calcium deficiency. The body wants its calcium in organic form as found in quinoa, not in the form of chalk (calcium carbonate), which most calcium supplement products contain.

Iron plays a major role in the blood's oxygen delivery to cells. Most supplemental iron sources are in organic and poorly absorbed. Too much of poorly used iron is actually harmful. On the other hand, high quality organic iron as found in quinoa is essential for good energy levels and healthy blood.

B Vitamins

B-complex vitamins are good for metabolism and handling stress. Vitamin B-6 and folic acid lower homocysteine levels, preventing arterial damage. B vitamins are needed for energy, digestion, nerves, muscles, skin & hair, organs, growth and repair of tissues, and more.

Cleaned Quinoa

Quinoa has a natural bitter seed coating which encases the seed and must be removed before consuming. This coating contains a saponin compound that detracts from the taste. This has been traditionally removed by vigorous washing with water. The varieties that are grown on the prairies have a high saponin content and this washing is even more of a concern.

NorQuin has developed a process which removes the bitter coating or saponin that coats the quinoa seed. This process involves both mechanical de-hulling and a rapid wash-dry process. The result is a consumer-friendly, easy-to-prepare, clean and highly nutritious whole food.

If you have previously eaten quinoa and found it slightly bitter, try our cleaned tasty product and taste the difference!

Simple Preparation Of Quinoa

Quinoa is very simple to prepare for eating.

The instructions on the bag state to add 1 cup of quinoa to 1 cup of boiling water, then bring back to a boil and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the water is absorbed. You can add a little more water for a fluffier result.

An even easier method is to add the quinoa to the same amount (or slightly more) of boiling water, then turn off the heat, cover it, and let it sit till the water is absorbed.

You can add the quinoa to salads, soups, vegetables, casseroles, eggs, potatoes, etc., or just eat it with some natural mineral salt or spices on it. Try eating quinoa for breakfast with our organic milled flax and some cinnamon added.

For raw food consumers, just soak the quinoa in water for several hours, pour off the excess water, and chew the seeds thoroughly.

Why Include Our Organic Cleaned Quinoa In Your Regular Diet?

Quinoa is one of the world's most perfect foods. It has been consumed for thousands of years in South America. The small nutritious seeds resemble millet. Quinoa is very versatile for a variety of cooking styles, inviting seasonings from mild to wild.

Quinoa seeds are naturally coated with a bitter-tasting saponin that encases the cylindrical seed, protecting it from birds and insects. NorQuin has developed a process to remove this coating, making our quinoa ready to prepare quickly.

This process involves both mechanical abrasion and a thorough washing with a rapid drying and stabilization process. NorQuin is the only company in North America offering this processed product.

This cleaning saves the end user from the extensive process of having to wash and rinse the seed to eliminate the slight bitterness. Our "clean" quinoa is ready for use by the consumer or further processing such as grinding into flour or cooking as is.

The flavor of NorQuin Brand "Golden Quinoa", has been described as mild and slightly "nutty". It is quite versatile in that it may be prepared in minutes as a side dish, a breakfast cereal or combined with other ingredients for a hearty main course. Quinoa may also be included in soups, salads and desserts or ground and used as a flour.

Cleaned "Golden Quinoa" is economical as it is a whole food and minimally processed under careful control. The seed is grown on the Canadian prairies by local farmers with Certified Organic farming operations. The plants thrive in the northern environment, with clean air, pure water, and the warming prairie sunshine.

The rare cadmium-free soil of northern Saskatchewan produces crops of quinoa that do not contain this common toxic metal.

Taste our product right out of the bag and you will agree that Norquin Brand Golden Quinoa has a delicate sweet and nutty flavor ideal for your culinary enjoyment.

Quinoa can be eaten as a hot breakfast cereal; an infant cereal; a rice replacement; a nutritional thickener for soups, chili and stew; in salads, casseroles and desserts; and more. It can be ground into flour as an alternative to wheat flour or rice flour.

Quinoa is gluten free and is therefore a natural choice for people unable to tolerate gluten in their diet, such as those with Celiac Disease. As a gluten-free product, it is suitable for anyone afflicted by wheat allergies. NorQuin takes great care to prevent contamination of our processing and milling equipment by gluten-containing products.

Whole wheat, including the wheat germ, contains lectins, harmful compounds that contribute to artery damage, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), and heart attacks. The excessive amount of wheat consumption in our diets is very unhealthy. Wheat is also acid-forming and often contributes to arthritic problems.

Quinoa provides a much better alternative to wheat and other grains, and almost no one is allergic to it. Remember, quinoa is not a grain, but a seed without the problem of the lectins that grains and beans have.

Well regulated harvesting, handling, processing and cold storage combine for an exceptionally clean product, of highest quality, free of foreign matter and true to product specifications.

Our products have a kosher certificate issued by the Kashrut Council of Toronto. (COR 541) Our organic clean quinoa is certified by Pro-Cert Organic Systems Ltd.

We genuinely care about our customers, our employees, our producers, our community and above all, our products. We strive to bring you the very best products at a fair price.

We encourage you to try NorQuin cleaned "Golden Quinoa" soon and find out for yourself why it has been referred to as the "seed of the gods". We hope that you will enjoy natures "gift" as much as we do.
