Disruption Can Happen -- Food Storage Is Crucial

You are undoubtedly aware of serious natural disasters caused by storms, floods, fires and earthquakes in locations around the world.

Last year an astounding number of homes in the U.S. were without power for an extended time after high winds swept through the South and the Midwest. Ice storms and hurricanes have also left thousands without power.

Meanwhile, the economy has had a major disruption and may be heading for a depression of unknown length.

Further, authorities are warning that the current strain of H₁N₁ flu now circulating is a pandemic emergency. This could result in quarantines of residents in highly populated areas.

It is crucial for people to understand that no matter how our lifestyle has been for many years, major changes can occur suddenly. Every household needs to be prepared for disturbances in the normal avenues of distribution of food, water, electricity and other necessities.

The amount of food stocked in local grocery stores could be gone in a day or two as people realize that supplies may not be replenished.

What if natural disasters caused roads to be blocked or destroyed so delivery trucks could not get through? What if all communications and power were knocked out for days, weeks or months by a storm, a large solar flare or an ElectroMagnetic Pulse (EMP) generated by an enemy?

For example, we have been experiencing a "solar minimum", a period of low solar activity, for quite a while. When solar flare activity returns, there could be a massive blast that could fry the power grids of much or all of the Earth. If your refrigerator, water, lights and heating system were not working; and you could not get cash from a bank branch or an ATM; and no stores or restaurants were open; what would you do for food after a couple of days? What would others in your community do?

Federal and state emergency services are woefully inadequate, and may barely function in a situation such as loss of all electrical power.

That is why it is important to make plans to have necessities on hand for an emergency. Here is a partial list:

~ nourishing, ready to eat foods ~ pure water

~ matches & candles ~ flashlights

~ batteries ~ blankets

~ tools ~ fuel in your vehicle

~ alternative heating (eg., wood stove, kerosene, etc.)

~ alternative transportation (eg., bicycle)

~ alternative power (eg., generator, wind, solar, etc.)
~ emergency radio (battery operated)

Food storage and storing water are at the top of the list. It is wise to keep enough of these on hand for at least a couple of weeks for everyone in your household. Some of those who have already prepared for such emergencies have enough survival supplies for six months, a year or more.

You can fill a variety of clean containers and store water around the house and garage. Use and replace them in a regular rotation. The stored water should be purified of chemicals. To eliminate bacteria that may grow in the water, add some hydrogen peroxide, stabilized oxygen, vodka, etc.

(NOTE: You can draw water from your water heater for a while in an emergency.)

The best choices for stored foods are nutritious, ready to eat items, that are protected from oxidation, and which do not readily spoil without refrigeration, such as the flaxseed, wheat germ and greens.

Most of the grains, seeds and beans are sproutable. Have containers suitable for sprouting on hand.

Maintain a supply of various heirloom vegetable and herb seeds (standard strains, not hybrids).
